The Bikeless bike fit.

What!! A bike fit without the bike. Why?

At the clinic we do a good amount of bike fits. The majority of which are due several different factors:

  • Lower back & neck pain
  • Mid back pain
  • Knee and sit bone pain
  • Hand tingling and numbness
  • Inefficient pedalling

Whilst changing the bike setup can change many things, everyone’s body moves differently. Given the number of bike fits that I do, I feel the state of the body has a greater contribution to the onset of these issues and as such the focus of many fits were then turned to addressing these issues.

So we have a small dilemma: Should we fit the bike to the body or the body to the bike? There are arguments that support both camps.

This is why we developed the PHYSIOBIKEFIT

Let’s explore why changing the body may have far reaching benefits beyond that of cycling and what would be involved in a PhysioBikeFit

Good movement quality is paramount for any activity, without it a compromise is made, which will inevitably lead to a physical compensation. The 3 key areas that we are concerned with are

  • Foot & Ankle
  • Pelvis & Low Back
  • Upper Back & Neck

With cycling, we are primarily concerned with 2 & 3.  Stiffness and immobility in these areas will lead to a deficit in flexibility, strength and balance in the legs and arms, which will lead to a decrease in comfort and performance. So working out the ‘What’, ‘Why’ and ‘How’ will go a great way to sort out the imbalances and therefore the discomforts/aches that we get when cycling.

Having a PhysioBikeFit, would include the following

Duration – 60 minutes

Equipment – Shorts and T-shirt

Information to think about prior to assessment – Make up of bike (crank length, gear ratios (chainring & cassette), stem length)

During the PhysioBikeFit we will look at the following:

Riding history (experience, comfort, performance, goals)

Injury History (not just for cycling but taking a global look at your injury profile)

Bike Data (collection of bike make/model, cleat type/position, crank length, saddle type

Biomechanical Movement Assessment (All movement patterns whilst off the bike)

Flexibility Assessment (typically looking at the back lines of the body)

Strength Assessment (shoulder girdle, hip flexors & glutes and calfs)

With the data gained form the assessment we are able to offer advice and continued support allowing you to rectify the movement, flexibility and strength issues that may be present.
